Former Central Bank governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and former governor of old Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu are among prominent Igbo sons and daughters to be honoured in the maiden edition of UGWU NDIGBO Awards holding in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The event, billed for the high brow Michelangelo Hotel in Mandela Square, is jointly organised by Clarion Africa magazine and Ohaneze Ndigbo South Africa and will hold on October 24.
Also billed for the awards are Peter Obi, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, Chief Ben Obi, Chief Martin Elechi, Igwe Emmanuel Ugwu, Uche Ogar and a few others. Renowned South Africa-based Neurologist, Ben Okoli, will also be honoured.
According to Chooks Oko, one of the organisers, the rationale for the UGWU NDIGBO awards is to acknowledge the hard work of those who toil day and night to make life easier for others.
He said, “There are unique qualities to each of the awardees. They exude a lot of selflessness in their handling of given assignments and relationship with the people. Our aim is to appreciate these people so that they can keep doing good while motivating others to emulate them”.
Former Ebonyi State head of service, Mrs. Ugo Nnachi, will deliver the keynote address while Prof. Francis Nwonwu of Africa Institute of South Africa is the guest of honour.
