The Reason Why Thousands Of Israelis Applied For Weapon Permits
Thousands of Israelis have applied for permits to carry guns, following an unprecedented wave of Palestinian knife attacks, a report said on Monday.
A statement by the Israel’s Internal Security Ministry said it had been inundated with requests, including from combatants who have asked to be allowed to carry their weapons off duty, guards, police volunteers and regular civilians.
Unlike in the US, firearms are not easily obtainable in Israel as the process of acquisition includes a permit after training, and psychological evaluation.
Speaking on the development, Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said ‘’it is a very strict procedure with lots of criteria’’.
Rosenfeld also said that those who may be eligible for gun permit –have a military background in addition to residing in areas considered as dangerous.
It would be recalled that in response to a wave of Palestinian attack in 2014, Israel eased firearm restrictions, allowing security guards to take their guns home after work, and special forces veterans to carry weapons.
However, the carrying of guns by the public remained very restricted.
