Roy Hodgson: I want to be a winner, not be popular

Not image concerned: Hodgson demands respect from his players

According to DailyMirror, Roy Hodgson says he does not care whether he is popular – just as long as England get results, reports John Cross from Brazil.
As the Three Lions begin their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign against Switzerland tonight, boss Hodgson has shown signs of losing his cool under mounting pressure.

admits the public mood has turned against him following the World Cup
disaster, but Hodgson said: “I’ve never sought popularity.
doesn’t really mean much to me. I have never been interested with being
popular with players. I want to be respected by them with the job I can
do as a professional. That’s all that bothers me.
“Am I seeing the nasty side of the job? No. There is no nasty side. I love this job. It’s a magnificent job.

Love for the job: Hodgson is determined to take the Three Lions forward

“It’s the pinnacle of any coaching career. To have the chance to coach your country.”
Hodgson did lose his temper, however, in the wake of the scrappy win over Norway in a friendly at Wembley last week.
was angry when questioned about the direction of his team, but the
manager still believes his young team are making progress and will
eventually make their country proud.
Hodgson said: “I am aware
that, after the World Cup and the enormous disappointment that followed,
there may have been a slight swing in popularity, I’d have been
surprised had there not been.

“But the real support and popularity is with the group of players I work with.
need them to believe that we can move forward and achieve things. I get
the good vibrations and feelings from there. I will have to live with
external ideas and thoughts and accept them.”
Hodgson also insisted that he does not care how England play against Vladimir Petkovic’s Switzerland – just as long as they win.
“I want the result. I’ll play badly and win given the choice. But we have to lift our heads a little bit,” he added.
“We’ve got reasons to be cheerful – if you are able to put behind you that fact that the World Cup was a major disappointment.”
