Davido was on Apple Radio Beats 1 this week. He was interviewed by Ebro Darden for the New York station. He talking about what genre of music he puts out and why. He also spoke on how Wande Cole And Dbanj encouraged him to do music.
Davido said after he left london Wande Cole and Dbanj told him his recond was doing well locallt and internationally.
On why he choose not to call his genre of music Afrobeat:
“It is different,” he said. “I don’t call my [music] Afrobeats, I call it Afrofusion,” he said, “You know the originator of the Afrobeats is Fela. Fela has a sound which I can say has heavy baseline, the Rhodes, brass instrument, [and] the percussion is different.” “Gobe is Afro mixed with Calypso. But I feel like Afrobeats is catchy and has caught wave since time.”
On the difference between Afropop and Afrobeats:
“I can’t really tell you the difference between Afropop and Afrobeats. I know some songs that I won’t call Afrobeats; I would call [them] Afropop or Afrotrap.”
Davido is currently working on an EP which he has teased will feature Young Thug, Trey songz and Tinashe.
