President Obama Mourns Death of ‘Creative Icon’ Pop Superstar Prince

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama joined millions of fans around the world in mourning the death of music legend Prince, who died earlier today at his estate in Minnesota.

“Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer,” Obama said in a statement released by the White House.

The president said that few artists have influenced popular music “more distinctly” or “touched quite so many people with their talent” as Prince did.

He recalled how Prince once said, “A strong spirit transcends rules,” and that he felt “nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative.”

Obama said he and Michelle are keeping Prince’s family, his band, and all who loved him in their thoughts and prayers.

The Obamas once hosted a private party at the White House in June 2015 where Prince, along with Stevie Wonder, performed. White House spokesperson Josh Earnest told reporters following the occasion that it was “a private social event” which the president and first lady paid for “on their own dime.”
