Opray Winfrey, Beyonce, Genevieve Nnaji & Desmond Elliot mentored me – Vicky Lonia
Our journalist Ethelbert Obinna Umeh had an exclusive media chat with multiple award-winning Radio/TV personality, events Host, Celebrity Red carpet presenter, model, and master communicator- Vicky Lonia. It was an inspiring encounter.
She talked about her road to limelight, the roles Beyonce, Opray Winfrey, Genevieve Nnaji, Desmond Elliot and VJ Presh played on her career, challenges she faced, breakups that almost claimed her life, upcoming events and lots more.
Below are the excerpts:
Who is Vicky Lonia?
Well, my name is Ihebuzo Chinonyerem Victoria, but my brand name is ‘Vicky Lonia’. The Vicky is an acronym from Victoria, while the Lonia is actually from the Book of Thesalonia. From research, i discovered that Lonia is a region of people that produces salt. I decided to take up the name so that i can spice up the entertainment world.
I am 21 years old, born on June 3rd, 1994 into a family of seven. I am the eldest. I studied Mass Communication from Imo State University, Owerri and graduated with Honours. I would be going for my NYSC soon. I am an events Host, Radio/ TV personality and model.
How did you develop your talents? Were they inborn?
Though I inherited some of my skills genetically. But, i can authoritatively tell you that i was actually mentored by Beyonce. Whenever i see her on the screen, i get so inspired. I watch Nollywood movies a lot, and the likes of Desmond Elliot, Emeka Ike, Rita Dominic, Genevieve Nnaji were phenomenal. I was really inspired by their acting skills.
Also, i watch international events; the likes of Oprah Winfrey, CNN, BBC etc were amazing. I love to sing in my church, i like to speak in public. I can actually say something meaningful.
Each of these activities and experiences helped in shaping the Vicky Lonia you are seeing today. When i was in my first year, i got tired of learning at a point, so i one morning, i went in search of a job at a media firm. I went to a lot of firms like HotFM, Orient FM, but later settled for the latter.
At a point, i met Pluto Ubah who fastens the move that was how I got job at Orient FM instantly that day. Pluto later became my producer and we did Orient entertainment News and O-town magic. From there, i went to NTA Owerri, and started my program ‘Youth Galaxy’. I later left them, and then concentrated more on event compeering.
I started from IMSU, hosting events, and red carpets. I have handled a lot of events across Nigeria on different cities. I later got employed at FSTV online channel. My program there is ‘Talk Galaxy with Vicky Lonia’ The programme is still ongoing till date.
How many events have you featured?
I have really performed in many of them are: THE ULTIMATE NIGERIAN MODEL SEARCH, 2015 MISS ORIENT UNIVERSE, 2015 FACE OF STARZ, 2015 THE UWENJAH FASHION SHOW, 2015 FACE OF OKWAIFUGO SOUTH EAST, 2015 FLIP ANKARA FASHION SHOW, 2015 IMO STATE ALUMINI ASSOCIATION, 2015 alongside MC AWILO LAFTA XPLOSION, 2015 MOST BEAUTIFUL FACE IN IMSU, PRIDE OF NIGERIA 2016 REALITY TV SHOW (worked with VJ PRESH of SilverBird TV) and lots more. My next event is MISS ORIENT NIGERIA 2016.
What was it like to work with VJ Presh?
I must confirm that the guy is damn cute, sexy and great to work with. I really learnt a lot from him, and he was happy teaching me some skills. I first met him at the just concluded Pride of Nigeria Reality TV show here in Owerri. I almost fainted when i was done with Red Carpet and he praised me. Really, i feel honoured working with someone i idolize.
Why do you love the ‘Galaxy’?
In a layman’s knowledge, galaxy is different shape of things, and all of these work in uniformity for the world to go round. I believe i am an embodiment of talents; i can sing, dance, speak and model. I am deeply committed to make the world a better place.
Youth Galaxy is a combination of entertainment, social and economic issue. The programme is all about youths, because we are the leaders of tomorrow.
What’s the relationship status of Vicky Lonia?
At the moment, I am not in a relationship. I am single. I felt bad in my last relationship; I invested much, but reaped very little. The guy in question wasn’t compatible with me. He wasn’t comfortable with my career.
Well, i didn’t blame him because it is just a handful of men that can accept it, seeing their women work through the night most times. Right now, i want to b more focused, i don’t want to go through another relationship. However, i might consider it in future. My previous relationship actually limited me.
Have you being abused or harassed sexually?
“Being an upcoming, and full of passion for my career and wanting so bad to make it, of course men have tried taking advantage of me sexually… As a young inexperienced girl, I almost fell into their hands but somehow, God kept me standing. So I can proudly say I have a clean slate in that aspect. It’s a matter of knowing your worth, keeping to principles, having patience and endurance.”
Any advice for the youths?
As a woman, i am a fighter. I have come across a lot of discouragements, but i have been able to move on. I want the youths to be fighters, and never to get discouraged by people’s views about them, whether positive or negative. I have failed several times, and have also learnt a lot from it. If you keep failing, keep rising. For those who wants to go into my field, please don’t be taken away by the fame, popularity or money, instead go into it because it is your passion, money and fame will much later.
Thanks for your time
You are welcome (smiles)
