Four people were arrested in connection with the assassination of a senior Burundian army general earlier this week.

Attorney General, Valentin Bagorikunda, said investigations are continuing in a bid to apprehend more suspects.

Bagorikunda said probes and court proceedings were also underway for suspects in the killings of other senior army officers in the past months.

Brig.-Gen. Athanase Kararuza, a senior security adviser at the office of the first vice-president, was shot dead in the capital Bujumbura on Monday morning on his way to work.

Meanwhile, inter-Burundian talks that were expected to take place from May the 2nd to the 6th in Arusha, Tanzania have been postponed.

The office of the facilitator in the Burundi dialogue confirmed this development in a press release. The talks were postponed following consultations made with East African Community Secretary General Liberat Mfumukeko.

The postponement will provide time to the facilitators to make further consultations with stakeholders and all concerned parties.
