Liverpool Close in on Deals for Spanish duo

Despite Iago Aspas’ best efforts
to deny Liverpool long-term target Alberto Moreno by persuading him to
stay at Sevilla, it appears as if the 22-year-old left back is finally
close to an Anfield switch, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Meanwhile, the Reds are also said to be closing in on Ahletico
Madrid’s 20-year-old right-back Javier Manquillo on a loan deal with
option to buy.

Moreno made 27 starts for Sevilla last season, netting three goals.
For those who don’t know, he’s an attacking left-back who loves to get
forward and dribble. His pace and attacking nature makes him a great fit
for Brendan Rodgers’ free-flowing attacking side, as well as being
young and hungry which fits the recent transfer policy.

Third time’s the charm?

Liverpool had a £16million bid for Moreno rejected by Sevilla earlier
in the window and on two separate occasions the deal has been reported
as dead in the water as the two sides were at an impasse.

Maybe Ian Arye has magically resurrected things or maybe Aspas’
negative comments worked as reverse psychology for the Spanish
international.

Ayre and Rodgers must have thought they were killing two birds with one stone by sending Aspas to Sevilla.

Getting rid of an unhappy mistake plus putting themselves in good
graces with the La Liga outfit as they tried to pry Moreno away. But,
Aspas proved to be that mistake that you cannot shake.

Right-back target

On the other side of defecse, the Reds are after Manquillo. He’s a
player with loads of potential but wants to move to get more game time
as he only featured for the Spanish champions three times last season.

This deal seemingly came out of nowhere, but it makes sense. For
Manquillo, he can play more than he did in Spain. Juanfran was the clear
first choice right-back last yearand he played just about every game.

But, because Glen Johnson is on the decline, Rodgers won’t demand he
plays in every game. Plus it’s not like Johnson has been setting the
world on fire lately.

For the Reds, they get a young right-back for the future as well as
someone who can contribute now. Unlike the purchase of young defender
Tiago Ilori last season, Manquillo won’t be brought in just to be loaned
back out in January.

Squad depth

If Liverpool wrap these two deals up, the problem area of full-back
will look a lot better. On the right they’ll have Johnson and Manquillo
while the left will show Moreno and oft-injured Jose Enrique. Plus Jon
Flanagan will get games at either side.

Rodgers has barked on about squad depth in most interviews this
summer and if these two deals come to fruition then he’s achieved it.
