Jose Mourinho reacts on Instagram to Portugal winning Euro 2016

960Portugal are Euro 2016 champions – incredible.

Cristiano Ronaldo and co. were always in with a chance of success in France but were largely unfancied in a tournament that also featured World Cup winners Germany and holders Spain.

But win they did in the most extraordinary of fashions, with Eder’s dramatic late strike ending Portugal’s wait for a first major title.

No one looked happier than Ronaldo – who was withdrawn in the 25th minute after suffering a knee injury – when the final whistle was blown, the Real Madrid winger crying tears of joy.

One man who was just as delighted, though, was Manchested Unitedmanager Jose Mourinho, who took to Instagram to celebrate his country’s success (see below).

Attached to a picture of himself with a Portugal scarf and in his pyjamas, Mourinho wrote: “If you want to visit the country of the European champions visit Portugal!”

Many expected France to storm to victory when Ronaldo was forced off before the half hour mark yet that wasn’t to be the case.

Portugal defended valiantly, getting numbers behind the ball and counter attacking whenever possession was retrieved.

And just when it seemed the somewhat underwhelming clash was heading for penalties, up stepped Lille striker Eder to write his name into the history books.

After collecting the ball some 35 yards out, the Swansea reject breezed past Laurent Koscielny before firing a rasping strike into the bottom left corner.

Try as they might, France were unable to muster a response and were ultimately left to rue a number of missed chances in normal time.

Following the game, Portugal boss Fernando Santos praised his “amazing group” of players.

Portugal v France - Final: UEFA Euro 2016

He said, per ESPN: “I’ve always said we’re a team. I never hide my thoughts — I always tell my players what’s on my mind.

“I’ve always told them we’ve got great talent but we need to fight more than our opponents, run more than them and be more concentrated than them.

“We have an amazing group. They’ve always believed what I told them: that we could win this.”
