Jose Mourinho chasing fourth and final Manchester United signing

download (6)Jose Mourinho has a reputation for starting life at new clubs in style. In 2004, he coined his own nickname when claiming he was ‘a special one’. Nine years later, in the same press room he claimed he was now ‘the happy one’.

There were no new nicknames in his first press conference at Manchester United but the Portuguese remained on top form.

Within seconds, he had already taken a subtle dig at Arsene Wenger, claiming he was not under pressure to perform at United because, as he put it, there are some managers who “have not won a title in ten years”.

But Mourinho was not done there. He inadvertently revealed that Manchester United had signed a third player. The press officer attempted to correct him but there was no going back from what he said.

Any Manchester United fan worth their salt will know Mourinho was talking about Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who is closing in on a £26million move.

But fans will be more interested in Mourinho’s hint that he was chasing one more major signing in the current transfer window. After completing deals for Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, it would appear, Mkhitaryan, Mourinho says he will not relax until the mysterious fourth player has joined.

He said: “I want specialists. From this four, we have three. When we have the fourth, I breathe. We are working hard on that.”

For Telegraph journalist James Ducker, there is only one man he can be talking about, Juventus star Paul Pogba.Jose-Mourinho-United-main

But what will Mourinho’s first couple of months look like at Old Trafford? Well, the players that didn’t take part in a major tournament this summer are set to return for pre-season training on Wednesday.

That will include the likes of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Phil Jones, who will all be desperate to impress the Special One.

Mourinho’s first game in charge of the Red Devils will come in just 17 days time against German outfit Borussia Dortmund in China. It’s fair to say that his second game at the helm – a showdown with Pep Guardiola and Manchester City – will take centre stage on July 25, while his side will come up against Turkish outfit Galatasaray on July 30.

United will take on Everton at Old Trafford on August 3 for Wayne Rooney’s testimonial, before battling Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 7.

Mourinho’s first Premier League game for United will come at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth on August 13.
