Guess the player Arsenal fans want Arsene Wenger to sign
On June 30th, Hal Robson-Kanu’s name appeared on a list. That list contained the names of the players Reading FC had decided to release. A day later, he is the hottest striker in Europe.
Robson-Kanu, who as of yesterday is unemployed, scored quite possibly the sleekest goal at the European Championships so far, giving Wales a 2-1 lead against Belgium and helping them on their way to a historic semi-final tie.
Controlling a pass from Aaron Ramsey with three defenders around him, the whole stadium expected Robson-Kanu to pass to Neil Taylor, who was storming into the box unmarked. He didn’t, instead opting to execute a perfect Cruyff turn and leave himself with a free shot on goal.
As commentator Robbie Savage correctly pointed out, if Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo had done the same thing, we would be talking about it for years and throwing out phrases like “the best ever”.
No one is claiming Robson-Kanu is the best striker ever but there is gathering momentum on Twitter for none other than Arsene Wenger to make a move to sign him. The Wales international started his career as an Arsenal youth candidate and fans are wondering if he could be the man to solve their problems.
